Treatment Network
Fact Sheet

Description of the Network:

The School Systems Treatment Network is a specialty group within ATRA, established to promote and preserve the grassroots philosophy of professional involvement. The mission of this network is to provide a means for recreational therapists working in school systems the opportunity to network and exchange resources, obtain professional support, and promote the profession of recreational therapy.

The CTRS who works in school systems can see clients with a variety of disabilities, including:
Physical Disabilities
Developmental Disabilities
Learning Disabilities
Mental Illness

Settings:

Public Schools
Private Schools
Residential Schools
Integrated Classrooms
Segregated Classrooms

Functional Areas Addressed:

Cognitive Functioning Decision-making, problem solving, attention span
Emotional Functioning Self-esteem, coping skills
Physical Functioning Mobility, gross motor, fine motor
Social Functioning Social skills, communication, social interaction
Leisure Functioning Leisure awareness, knowledge of resources, leisure skills, level of participation, community involvement

Interventions:

Leisure education
Social skills instruction
Community instruction
Leisure skill building
Behavior management
Consultation with parents and teachers

Other Responsibilities:

Recreational therapists working in schools are often responsible for the recreation portion of a student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). When a child approaches age 14 the recreational therapist is also responsible for the Individualized Transition Plan (ITP). The recreational therapists must work closely with teachers, parents and other professionals to meet the needs of a student receiving services from a recreational therapist.

Other Considerations:

If a student is to receive recreational therapy as a related service, according to law (IDEA) it must help the student benefit from special education.
