Guidelines for Competency Assessment and Curriculum Planning in TRGuidelines for Competency Assessment and Curriculum Planning in Therapeutic Recreation: A Tool for Self Evaluation

ATRA Higher Education Task Force (Terry Kinney, Ph.D., CTRS & Jeff Witman, Ed.D, CTRS, Chairs)

ATRA’s Higher Education Task Force, along with the efforts of consensus session participants and many reviewers, have developed an important document on the professional preparation of future practitioners. The final report from the Task Force revealed much more than the anticipated guidelines for therapeutic recreation program curriculum development in academic settings. In addition to the curriculum recommendations, the document also provides much needed direction on professional competencies for recreational therapists. The document serves two primary roles, one as a document that provides tools for the self assessment of professional competencies (of any practitioner); and secondly, the publication provides guidance and recommendations for the development, redesign and improvement of academic therapeutic recreation curriculum. This document serves the needs of the recreational therapy practitioner, the student or future professional and the educator. It is a must read for any professional library or collection.
