Long Term Care Monograph Series
Enhancing Your Practice in Long Term Care

ATRA is pleased to announce the release of the new Long Term Care Monograph Series entitled, “Enhancing Your Practice in Long Term Care”. This series of monographs was designed to be a clinical practice resource for recreational therapists working in long term care settings, and encompasses a variety of topics that impact recreational therapy in this clinical setting. These monographs will also assist in encouraging the practice of recreational therapy in long term care settings, transitioning from activity programs to the practice of recreational therapy.

An additional bonus to this series is the availability of continuing education credit for reading the monograph, and completing a test. Similar in format to other ATRA distance learning opportunities, the monographs are worth .2 CEUs (or 2 contact hours).

There are a total of 18 topics planned for this monograph series. Topics in this series will include: assessment, MDS, documentation, treatment protocols, short term stay patients, survey process, reimbursement and LTC trends and issues. These monographs will be released over a three-year period. They are three holed punched, with each monograph being 20-50 pages, to fit into a monograph binder that will be available later as the series develops.

Volume 1: Group Treatments (2004)

The Group Treatments monograph describes the role of a recreational therapist working in a skilled nursing facility, and in particular on a Medicare distinct unit. The process of developing and implementing a group treatment program is presented as a treatment setting for working with other allied healthcare disciplines. The process of putting daily groups into place, as well as group ideas and documentation issues, is discussed.

Volume 2: MDS (2004)

The MDS monograph offers an in-depth discussion of the MDS from the development of the Resident Assessment Instrument to its current functions within skilled nursing facilities. Specific sections relevant to recreational therapy are discussed, as well as information on completing Section T (physician ordered recreational therapy).

Volume 3: Short Stay/Rehabilitation Patients (2006)

Explore recreational therapy as it relates to short stay, rehabilitation or Medicare distinct units within skilled nursing facilities. The recreational therapy process is detailed as well as Medicare, Prospective Payment System and the MDS as they relate to short stay units. Treatment areas and samples of documentation are included.
